What causes gum disease?

Our mouths are full of bacteria. This bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colourless “plaque” on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of this plaque. However, if this plaque is not removed, it can harden and form “tartar”, a substance that brushing alone will not remove.

The longer plaque and tartar are on teeth, the more harmful they become. They will eventually cause inflammation of the gums or, “gingivitis.” With gingivitis, your gums become red, swollen and will bleed easily.  It is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily care.

When it is not treated however, it may well advance to “periodontitis” (which means “inflammation around the tooth”). In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces (called “pockets”) that become infected. This infection can lead to tooth loss.

What follows is a short list of things YOU can do to prevent gum disease and maintain a healthy smile;

  • Brush your teeth twice daily.
  • Floss regularly to remove plaque from between teeth.
  • You cannot remove all traces of plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing so it is important that you visit your dentist regularly for a check-up and a professional cleaning.
  • Avoid tobacco and eat a healthy balanced diet.
