What is a Prosthodontist?

A  prosthodontist  is the most highly trained and specialised dentist in the provision of  cosmetic / aesthetic dentistry . With their vast array of skills they are frequently called upon to treat a wide spectrum of dental problems, from missing or broken teeth to complex, full mouth reconstructions.

Smile Design

It’s amazing how much our smile can affect our appearance and how we feel about ourselves!

  •  Every smile is unique.  For this reason, time and skill is required to customise a treatment plan to enhance your smile so that the end result can meet your goals and your expectations.
  • There are many interpretations of what makes the perfect smile, from the “Hollywood smile” to making your teeth look natural and healthy. We have the skills and training to provide you with the  perfect smile for you!
  • A thorough assessment of your smile and oral health is carried out (including the use of study models and photographs).
  • With all the information gathered, we can advise you on how your smile can be enhanced using state-of-the-art techniques.
  • We recommend planning the treatments on models of your teeth (diagnostic wax up) so we can plan and discuss the final result before you begin.
  • We often trial your new smile, so it can be perfected until you are completely satisfied before the final treatment is complete!

Natural Beauty Conservative Dentistry

  • We believe  a natural smile is true beauty,  and encourage patients to understand that with small improvements they can maintain their natural teeth as much as possible.
  • We do not encourage patients to have aggressive, damaging treatments that they do not need.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth colour is a very individual feature. It is affected by many factors such as enamel thickness, complexion and oral health!

What causes discolouration?

  • Plaque: Poor oral hygiene can lead to deposits building up on the teeth
  • Staining: Coffee, tea, and red wine can stain the enamel
  • Smoking: Tobacco causes brown staining on your teeth
  • Decay: Dental caries can lead to cavities and discolouration
  • Trauma: An injury or blow to your teeth can cause changes in the tooth blood supply leading to a grey tooth
  • Erosion: This can cause teeth to appear yellow as enamel is thinner
  • Age: Can lead to a gradual dulling of the teeth

The first step in whitening your smile is to find the cause of discolouration. Once that has been determined we can provide the most appropriate and successful treatment to brighten the shade of your teeth.

What techniques do we use?

  • There are multiple whitening treatments available today. At Dental House, we use the best, scientifically proven, safe techniques to brighten your teeth, making sure that you get the optimum result.
  •  Our techniques vary and are prescribed to suit your specific problems ensuring that we always put the health of your teeth first.

Missing Teeth

  • Our primary goal in modern dentistry is to prevent tooth loss. Unfortunately, neglect, gum disease, decay, trauma and illness can lead to premature tooth loss.
  •  Missing teeth can lead to unfavourable tooth movement, poor aesthetics, reduced chewing function, collapse of the bite and many other dental problems.
  • We aim our treatments at preventing tooth loss, and replacing missing teeth to restore appearance and function.

Are you missing one or more teeth?

  • Depending on the number of missing teeth, the condition of the remaining teeth, motivation and desire, teeth may be replaced by implant-supported crowns / bridges, conventional fixed bridges, or removable partial dentures.
  • We will advise you which options will work best for you!

Dental Implants

A dental implant can take the place of the absent tooth. After a period of healing a crown is designed that attaches to the implant. The end result is a restoration that is as close as possible to having your own tooth back.

Bridges

Dental bridges offer a fixed permanent means of filling in gaps or replacing missing teeth. Bridges allow the dentist to design a natural smile using replacements when there are one or more teeth missing.

There are many different bridge designs. We can advise you what will work for you.

If you are missing multiple teeth, dental implants can be used to support bridges.

DENTURES

A custom made, well designed denture should look natural. It should be stable, comfortable and secure. We can carefully plan and construct aesthetic, comfortable dentures.

Are you unhappy with your dentures?

  • There is no need for anyone to suffer with uncomfortable dentures. Today we have many options to make dentures more stable, comfortable and to allow you to eat and speak with confidence.

Do your dentures look like false teeth?

  • Dentures don’t need to look fake. They can be made to look exactly like real teeth. Natural teeth can be carefully selected to give you a natural smile. The gums on dentures can be formed to look like real gums.

Veneers & Crowns

The following aesthetic treatments can improve your teeth

Veneers

Veneers are very thin pieces of tooth-like material, custom-made and bonded onto the front of your natural teeth to improve the shape, shade and alignment of teeth. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile.  They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful long lasting smile.

Reasons for Veneers:

  • Cosmetically, to create a uniform, white, beautiful smile
  • Improve appearance of mildly crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Severely discoloured teeth
  • Teeth which are too small or large
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces
  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • To improve malformed or damaged teeth

Types of Veneers

Porcelain Veneers: These are custom made by a master technician who hand crafts the veneer to your specifications. The skill of the dentist and technician determines the success of veneers. We only use the highest quality materials and techniques. We work with the finest technicians to ensure the best results.

Composite Veneers: These are a more cost-effective solution, involve less tooth preparation and are ideal for adolescent patients following orthodontic treatment.

Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.  A crown protects and strengthens the tooth that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. There are several types of crowns.  They are highly durable and will last many years. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons for Crowns:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Weakened teeth
  • Cosmetic improvements
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings
  • Tooth has a root canal treatment
  • Tooth supporting a denture

Bonded Restorations

What are Bonded Restorations?

Adhesive Dentistry (Bonding) allows conservative solutions to dental problems.
Nobody wants to cut down natural, healthy tooth structure if it can be avoided.
Sometimes the best solution involves minimal adjustment and bonded restorations.

Types of Bonded Restorations

  • Resin bonded Bridge (Adhesive Bridge).  This is a bridge used to replace a missing tooth, avoiding the need to file down the neighbouring teeth.
  • Composite Veneer.  These veneers are custom made to improve the shape and contour of your teeth with minimal preparation and minimal cost.
  • Bonded build up.  When a tooth is extensively worn down, but otherwise unfilled and healthy, bonded build ups can be used to rebuild the tooth without cutting away healthy tooth structure.
  • Bonded on-lay or in-lay.  When a tooth has a large filling but does not need a full crown, bonded on-lays or in-lays can provide a cosmetic, strong, long-lasting alternative to large grey amalgam fillings.

Tooth Wear

Tooth wear (tooth surface loss) is caused by a number of factors. The most common causes are:

  • Tooth Grinding.  Grinding and clenching is very common. For some people it can be severe, leading to visible flattening and wear of their teeth.  Tooth wear is made worse when back teeth are lost, causing extensive damage to the front teeth.
  • Acid Erosion.  Acid causes softening of the enamel and then dentine causing teeth to wear down. Sources of acid include:
  • Dietary causes.  such as citrus fruits (lemon, lime, oranges), juices, fizzy drinks (including diet sodas), smoothies and alcohol.
  • Internal acids.  Can reach the teeth through conditions such as stomach acid reflux, vomiting, regurgitation, bulimia, stomach ulcers, and hiatus hernias.

Treatment Options for Tooth Wear

Prevention

Diagnosing the cause of tooth wear is crucial to successful treatment.
The first priority is to eliminate the cause. We can work with you, in confidence, to identify and solve the problem.

Dental Appliances

Dental appliances (splints) may be prescribed by your dentist to treat, manage or prevent various problems.

Tooth Grinding

Can cause wear of your natural teeth and can damage your restorations. A night guard appliance may be prescribed to prevent tooth contact during grinding.

TMD Pain (Muscle/Joint Pain)

Pain from the jaw joint and facial muscles has many causes and contributing factors. Sometimes a splintmay be provided to rest the jaws and help with the pain. This must follow a thorough diagnosis to rule out other causes of joint and muscle pain.

Bite Problems

Tooth wear, tooth loss, trauma and growth problems can lead to bite problems, a flat plane splint may be used prior to full mouth rehabilitation to find a comfortable stable bite position.

Restorations

If tooth wear is diagnosed early or only affects a few teeth it can be successfully treated with appropriate restorations. Solutions including bonded restorations, crowns, veneers, and onlays can rebuild the damaged tooth back to its original form.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation

A prosthodontist is highly trained and experienced in rebuilding severely damaged mouths. A full oral rehabilitation is a process whereby your prosthodontist completely rehabilitates all of your teeth to correct the bite, appearance and replace missing teeth.

This treatment is only required in specific circumstances and is only carried out after a rigorous diagnostic process. A full oral rehabilitation may involve the use of a variety of restorations.

This treatment takes time but the results are amazing!
