This weekend I was in the beautiful city of Parma attending a FACE orthodontics training seminar, as part of a two year course. The FACE approach encourages orthodontists to take a more holistic approach to treatment.

For me, great orthodontics is not just about treating the smile by straightening teeth and administiring braces (be they 6 month braces or otherwise).

I firmly believe that a great smile is built upon understanding how the teeth sit within the entire dental and facial system: jawline, chin point, cheek bone structure, and so forth. That’s why I follow the ‘FACE’ orthodontic approach to treatment.

FACE is a treatment approach that encourages you to conduct deeper analysis of a patient’s mouth.. How do the teeth look in relation to the patients’s other facial features, while at the same time giving equal importance to jaw and teeth function. Only when you conduct this deeper analysis can you create a truly wonderful smile.

When I apply the FACE model to my orthodontic cases I’m looking to match the goals of orthodontics with comprehensive dentistry. These goals are beautifully aligned teeth that fit naturally with properly positioned jaw joints—this promotes healthy tissue, efficient chewing, proper lip support, and ideal facial balance. In short a wonderful smile.
