What are tooth implants?

Our teeth are made up of two parts;

  1. The part visible on the surface, the crown,
  1. The part inside (and not visible), the root.

Tooth Implants are fundamentally the same thing;

  1. A porcelain or ceramic crown which is made in a dental lab.
  1. A metallic root (the implant), which the crown is placed onto- A tooth implant is about the same size as the root of a natural tooth. It is positioned underneath the gum where the root of the tooth used to be.

Tooth implants can:

  • Replace a single tooth, without requiring support from neighbouring teeth.
  • Replace multiple missing teeth, restoring your smile and bite.
  • Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.
  • Replace a denture, with teeth that are fixed in place.

The benefits of tooth implants

Tooth implants are widely considered to be the most successful method of tooth replacement used today, because they give a number of benefits to patients.

A natural smile

A tooth implant looks and feels just like your natural tooth. The colour, shape and contour of the new tooth can be made to match your remaining teeth. The result is a natural smile, that can bring back your confidence and quality of life.

Eat and speak normally

Did you have to forfeit some of your favourite dishes since you lost your teeth? Do you feel self-conscious talking to friends and work colleagues? Tooth implants can bring back the full function of natural teeth.  This means that no matter how hard, crunchy or sticky the food, tooth implants can put it back on the menu for you. On top of that, they can restore your clear speech for the next networking event or social gathering.

Neighbouring teeth stay intact

Other restoration methods often require neighbouring teeth to be ground down to anchor the restoration in your mouth. Tooth implants do not harm neighbouring teeth.

Stable and comfortable fit

Since tooth implants are fixed to your jaw bone, they are usually more stable, more comfortable and long-lasting than other restorations. On top of that, tooth implants are made of biocompatible materials, which means that your body can tolerate them.

A long-lasting and proven solution

Tooth implants are very durable. With proper care and good oral hygiene, implants will last for many years or even a lifetime. Decades of research have gone into their functionality and stability, since the first patient received modern tooth implants in 1965.

Cost-effectiveness

Dental implant treatment can be considered a long-term investment into your health and your well-being; fundamentally, they are an investment into your life. Compared to other restorations, costs can seem higher at first glance. However, higher maintenance costs, the potential increase in lost jaw bone, and, ultimately, the loss of even more teeth can make other restorations more expensive in the long run.

There are several different methods dental professionals use to replace missing teeth, for example:

  • Dental implants
  • Dentures
  • Dental bridges

when to get dental implants

Today we are going to talk about dental implants and their benefits to the patient.

What follows is a list of questions you should ask if you are considering dental implants:

Do I want a natural-looking smile?

A dental implant feels, fits and acts just like a natural tooth. Other options may interfere with your normal everyday eating, smiling, and speaking.

Do I want a stress-free smile?

Dental implants allow you to bite naturally, eat anything you want, and brush your teeth as normal.  Dentures can sometimes feel uncomfortable when eating, restrict your food choices, and need to be removed for cleaning.

Do I want to smile proudly?

Dental implants are fixed in place, so they cannot move.  They can give you confidence in your smile.  Dentures may slip when eating, talking or even laughing.
