Professional teeth cleaning is often referred to as ‘Prophylaxis’ (or prophy for short). It is a Greek word meaning “to prevent beforehand” (i.e. prevention of  gum disease). Generally, this procedure is known as a “Scale & Polish.”

Teeth cleaning involves removing plaque (a soft, sticky layer of bacteria, food & saliva) and hardened tartar (also known as calculus) deposits that have built up on your teeth over time.

Teeth cleaning explained

Your teeth are constantly covered in saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help to strengthen and protect them. Certainly, this is very beneficial.  However, it does mean that we tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on the teeth. This chalky substance builds up over time, (much like the limescale deposits at the base of your kettle). Normally, it is tooth-coloured and can easily pass as part of the teeth, but it can also vary from brown to black in colour.

Unfortunately, if this tartar is allowed to build up on your teeth, it will provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive beside your gums.

Teeth cleaning/scaling and polishing leaves the surfaces of your teeth beautifully clean and smooth so that bacteria cannot thrive. This makes it easier for you to maintain good dental hygiene during your own oral health routine.
