This is my first blog, so I thought I would give you a run through of the Masters course I’m currently doing. It’s a Masters in Lingual Orthodontics from The University of Hannover in Germany.

Firstly why am I doing this course? I’ve been treating patients with lingual braces for the past 5 years and have over 100 cases completed or in treatment.

I’d consider myself as one of the most experienced lingual orthodontists in Ireland, but as an orthodontist you can never stop learning. This course allows me to learn from the very best globally.

It also gives me an opportunity to treat cases that I normally not get the opportunity to do so back in Dublin.

The course began in September of last year. I’ll be in Hannover once a month for two years. All this travel has really built up the Lufthansa air miles. First I fly to Frankfurt and then connect to Hannover. I am getting to know Frankfurt airport very well-it’s a mini city really. One day I will spend some time getting to know Frankfurt, but right now all I’ve seen of the city is the inside of an airport.

However, I am surprised by how beautiful Hannover is. The city is very low rise and surrounded by beautiful forests. Almost like the cover of a Christmas chocolate tin.

The Medical Centre in Hannover, where the course is run, is huge. 15,000 people work there. It’s an internationally recognized centre of excellence in many fields of medicine, with many patients travelling internationally to be treated there.

There are 15 of us enrolled on the course this year. My classmates are from across the globe, as far afield as the US. All registered specialist orthodontists, with a minimum of 5-10 years clinical experience with lingual braces.

The two days are structured around seminars on a Friday followed by a clinical day on a Saturday.

We are fortunate to have the top experts present to us; we discuss difficult cases and look at how they were treated.

Our clinical day begins with us reviewing each other’s cases and discussing what the ideal treatment approaches would be. We then treat these patients on Saturday afternoon.

Back in Dublin the vast majority of my lingual patients are adults in there thirties, so it’s interesting to be treating teenagers in Hannover. Who knows maybe in twenty years, lingual braces will be the most common type of braces?

Alas one thing never changes, there are always a few patients that forget to wear their elastics! It really is the same, the world over.

Next week I will talk a bit about the different types of lingual brace that are available.

If you are considering lingual braces, feel free to contact the clinic here Dental house where we will answer any questions you may have.
