This month’s visit to Germany followed a slightly different pattern, with some extra days added to our usual busy schedule. The first two days saw us making orthodontic splints.

These are like plastic ‘retainers’, they are given to patients with lingual braces who are suffering from jaw pain. Jaw pain is not particularly common and most orthodontists will not routinely see patients that need splints.

It can be due to lots of different causes. Sometimes these splints can help and sometimes they don’t. It’s all about the right treatment for the right person at the right time. Getting the opportunity to make splints and getting a deeper understanding of how they work is invaluable. Over the course of the weekend I built a deeper theoretical and practical understanding, of my ten years of clinical practice. These are refined skills that I will be putting into practice with my own patients back in Ireland.

Learning about splints was fairly intensive. The course leaders are eager to really push us as students. Thankfully there was some good down time to rest and recharge before the next day’s clinic.

Hanover has its own city forest and city lake. Myself and a colleague went for a good run, one of the evenings. He is a keen cyclist. He told me he once reached a top speed of 106 Km during a race. That will give me something to think about at my next triathlon!
