The benefits of having braces behind your teeth are evident, no one need know you are wearing braces. But unlike regular braces, which are attached to the front of the teeth, lingual braces can in some patients cause lisping. This can take a while to go.

Most patients will get used to the braces within a few weeks. The more you talk the more quickly your lisping will subside.

We recommend that patients read out aloud the Rainbow Passage several times a day. This short passage, created by speech therapists, contains lots of the sound combinations found in the English language. It basically retrains you to talk, and to compensate for the brace in your mouth

Rainbow Passage

When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act like a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colours. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon. There is, according to a legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond its reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Most patients report that lisping is no longer a problem after about 3 weeks. There are patients who have prolonged lisping. These tend to be patients who are not talking enough! But even in these cases lisping is gone after a couple of months as the mouth naturally adapts.

The key thing here is helping yourself. Those patents that are proactive and take the time to read the passage are also likely to be the patients who brush properly and look after their braces.
