As an orthodontist my goal is giving you a great smile. Straight teeth help make this possible. Of course, the shape and form of your lips and having healthy gums is also important. There are a few things that I look to achieve when working with a patient on creating a great smile for them.

Teeth Symmetry: I always look to get symmetry around the centreline of a patient’s face. It’s not always one hundred percent doable, but I like to get as close to the ideal as possible.

Smile Line:The edges of your upper teeth should follow the curvature of the lower lip when you grin.

Gum Line: The gum line must be symmetrical on both sides of the mouth to give a balanced appearance. Ideally this line should follow the line of the upper lip, a gummy smile is less than ideal

Healthy gums: Gum tissue should be light pink in colour and firm texture without any swelling or bleeding.

Tooth dimensions and proportions: I believe it’s important to get an aesthetic balance in terms of symmetry and proportion. For example: the incisor teeth should be of equal size on either side of the mouth. Central incisor should be bigger than canines, etc.

Inter-incisal Angles: Inter-incisal Angles are the small triangular shapes made by the tips of the teeth. They help give your mouth a natural look.

Lips: Lips are to teeth what a frame is to a picture! So please use a chap stick!

There are many other factors that I consider when designing a smile. But the key skill set is having a good appreciation of how it comes together on your face. A good orthodontist will always ‘design’, within the context of your entire face. It’s not just about straight teeth!
