The healthier your teeth are, the happier you look.  Your teeth are important in many ways. If you take care of them, they’ll help take care of you. That’s why it is vital that you give your child the best start and teach them about good oral hygiene and its benefits. Strong, healthy teeth help your child chew the right foods to help them grow. They help your child to speak clearly. And yes, they help your child look their happy, smiling best.The team at Dental House have come up with a list of the mostly commonly asked questions regarding children’s oral health and have provided you with all the answers;

What age should kids start going to the dentist?

The Irish Dental Association (IDA) recommends that a child go to their dentist by age 1 or within six months after their first tooth erupts. Typically, their primary teeth will begin growing in and around 6 months of age.

What age should you start brushing your child’s teeth?

In the beginning, it is sufficient to just wet your child’s toothbrush. At around age 1, you can start using a pea-sized amount of a non-fluoridated toothpaste. Introduce fluoride toothpaste when your child is at least 2 years old. Brush gently all around your child’s baby teeth — front and back.

How long should a child brush their teeth?

You may graduate to a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when your child turns 3. Brush their teeth twice a day – in the morning and just before bed. Spend 2 minutes brushing, concentrating a good portion of this time on the back molars.

For your inquisitive little ones- “Mommy why do I need to brush my teeth?

You should brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

After you eat, bacteria go crazy for the sugar on your teeth, like ants at a picnic. They break this sugar down into acids that eat away at your tooth enamel.  This causes holes in your teeth called cavities. Bacteria also causes gingivitis, which is gum disease that can make your gums red, swollen, and sore.

If you don’t take care of your teeth, cavities and unhealthy gums will make your mouth very, very painful. Eating will become very difficult and you won’t really feel like smiling very much.
