Prosthodontics

What does a Prosthodontist do?

You may wish to visit a prosthodontist is you are missing one or more teeth, you are unhappy with existing crowns, you are interested in dental implants, you wear dentures or removable partial dentures or you want to improve your smile.

What is treatment like?

A full consultation will be carried out at your initial visit. A course of treatment specifically tailored to your needs will be thoroughly explained to you and any questions you may have will be answered. Any recommendations are communicated through individual discussion, followed by a written report with a detailed quotation.

Following your consultation, we will schedule follow up appointments to suit your schedule. You will receive comprehensive information regarding your treatment and what to expect. We will maintain strong communication with your general dentist throughout your course of specialised treatment.

How long will it take?

This depends on the extent of your initial problem and your individual requirements. Typical cases last from 3 months to 1 year although more complex cases can take up to 2-3 years to complete. Temporary replacements for missing teeth are provided at all stages of treatment.

Is treatment painful?

No, once the tooth and surrounding area has been numbed using local anaesthetic you will not feel any pain. All procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic (similar to getting a filling) or conscious sedation. There may be some discomfort following certain procedures which you will be advised how to manage.

We pride ourselves in staying at the cutting edge of our field so you receive the best possible treatment available, tailored to your individual needs. Dentures

Bottom denture

As few as two implants can be used to secure a denture in place.

The vast majority of people who struggle with lower dentures are suitable candidates. Implant treatment for bottom dentures is partially covered by health insurers.

Top denture

At least four implants are required to secure a denture in place. Many who struggle with upper dentures are suitable candidates. We can design a denture that doesn’t cover the roof of your mouth.

Benefits

  • Your denture will be secure at all times.
  • This will allow you to eat a full variety of food normally.
  • It will prevent the denture rubbing on the gums causing irritation.
  •  It will give you confidence when you are out in public – eating, talking and smiling.

Replacing dentures with fixed teeth

For patients where it is possible to use a larger number of implants, you can say goodbye to dentures and have teeth permanently fixed to the implants.

In most cases six implants are needed in the bottom jaw and eight implants in the top jaw to replace your dentures with fixed teeth.

Benefits

  • These teeth will look, feel and function like natural teeth.
  • The teeth are permanently fixed to the implants, so you won’t need to take them in and out to clean them.
  • As the teeth fit directly to the implants, they do not rest on the gums like dentures.

alternatives to dental implants and dentures

The alternatives to a dental implant include a bridge or a partial denture.

Bridge
Replaces a missing tooth by using the two neighbouring teeth to support a false porcelain tooth. The neighbouring teeth have to be ground down to support the bridge. This can weaken these teeth and can decrease their lifespan.

Partial Denture
A removable appliance where a false tooth is connected to a plate. This rests on the gums and against surrounding teeth to help stay in place. This can increase the risk of decay and gum disease due to increased plaque build up. It can feel uncomfortable, bulky and loose.

Replacing a back tooth

Missing one or more back teeth

  • Are you missing one or more back teeth?
  • Do you have a broken back tooth which cannot be fixed?
  • Do you have difficulty chewing because of missing back teeth?
  • Do you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth?
  • Do you have a partial denture which you don’t like to wear?
  • Would you like to know the best way to replace a broken or missing back tooth?

I first attended Dr Mulrooney looking for advice on cosmetic work. He told me very clearly about all my different options, as a nervous patient I was very surprised at how comfortable I felt in the chair. Dr. Mulrooney helped me choose the right option for me and I can now smile with confidence.
