It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but please, spare a thought for your oral health this holiday season
Christmas is just around the corner and we’re all geared up for the festivities. Mince pies, wine, selection boxes and tins and tins of sweets will no doubt make their way into our festive diets.
Unfortunately, constant snacking, drinking and eating of sugary foods and drinks over the festive period can make for a miserable time for your teeth. The indulgences and tempting treats of the season mean that your teeth are going to be in harm’s way.
The Dental House team want to make sure your teeth don’t suffer the festive blues, so here are our five top tips for taking care of your oral health this Christmas.
1. Mince pies, Christmas cake and pudding; beware of these seasonal treats
Mince pies, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding are all laden with dried fruit, which is high in sugar. These kinds of foods stick to teeth and can cause the most damage, particularly if we’re gorging on them throughout the festivities.
2. Stick to your oral hygiene routine.
The worst thing you can do is neglect your oral hygiene routine on Christmas Eve for a few days. Your teeth take a bit of a hammering, with all of the chocolates, sugary foods and drinks and the alcohol consumed over the festive period. Two minutes, twice a day is not going to take from the celebrations!
3. Say cheese!
Cheese is great for your teeth. It helps to return your mouth to its natural acid balance and it helps to reduce your chances of developing tooth decay. For this reason, cheeseboards after the main meal are a fantastic idea.
4. Always use a bottle opener
We can all confess to attempting to open a bottle of beer with our teeth at some point in our lives. Please please remember your teeth aren’t tools! If your party trick is to open a bottle of beer with your teeth, you’re actually doing your teeth more harm than good. Protect your teeth and invest in a bottle opener!
Moderation is the most important thing for you to keep in mind this Christmas. Of course you should fully enjoy this time of year without having to compromise on what you eat and drink. Just bear in mind that it is not how much sugary food and drink you have, but how often you have them that causes a risky situation for your oral health.
