Zygoma dental implants- an alternative for those of you who have been told that you are not a candidate for dental implants due to lack of bone in your upper jaw.

Then you may benefit from the zygoma implant developed by Professor Per Ingvar Brånemark. which provides an excellent alternative to bone grafting procedures for the severely resorbed jaw bone with minimal surgical trauma and maximum oral function.

zygoma implants

Zygoma dental implants are used in the upper jaw when there is insufficient bone for ordinary implants. They provide support for implant bridgework where there has been a substantial amount of bone loss from the upper jaw, and ordinary implants cannot be used on their own to support a bridge.

This is a very specialist procedure and Dental House is one of a few practices in Ireland with the expertise to use such procedures.

The implants are longer than ordinary dental implants and ‘anchor’ to the very strong bulk of bone that forms the cheekbone, or zygomatic arch – hence their name. This means that the implants can be used as an alternative to complex bone grafting operations, making it possible to carry out surgery in just one stage. Prior to zygoma implant surgery, a CBCT scan will be taken to assess the amount of bone available in the upper jaw and allow us to plan the placement of these implants.

It is also possible to make an anatomical model of your jaw, which enables us to visualise the precise shape of the jaw and cheekbone, without having to carry out wide surgical exposure. Typically, two zygomatic implants are used along with 2-4 ordinary implants. Where bone availability is even more limited, four zygoma implants may be used.

Dental House is now pleased to provide Zygoma dental implant therapy for patients with severely resorbed upper jaws. Our resident Implantologist Dr Wilson Grigolli, studied and worked alongside Brånemark acquiring a vast knowledge of the treatment. We would be very happy to evaluate any individual who has substantial bone loss and may be a candidate for the zygoma implant treatment. Click here to arrange a consultation.
